Whew! What a night we had. Yesterday we were having the DeMaso family over for dinner for the first time. I was outside getting things set up for the cookout and Daddy was taking a shower after doing yardwork all afternoon when Maya, who had been whiny and irritable all day from her allergies, told me her hand hurt. I didn't think much of it as she had been complaining and miserable about most everything all day any way.
Went to go change her diaper and laid her on our bed and I could tell that something was very wrong by the expression on her face, the lack of movement in her right arm and the way she winced in pain.
Guests were due to arrive with in the half hour and I told Scott we were going to the ER. So I loaded Maya up and off we went to Kosair Hospital. We were there last Saturday for Ella and her stitches/glue. Which is healing nicely.
Maya's allergies had really kicked in during the morning with uncontrollable coughing, runny eyes and nose, and stuffed up.
The ER Dr. listened to her lungs and said they sounded clear. She was fairly certain Maya was dealing with allergy related symptoms. This past Wed. night at 11pm Maya was running a 104.3 fever. We got that down, but she is still feeling just ucky.
Dr. said to continue with her pulmacourt and albuterol treatments PRN for the allergies. She also noticed that she had pus in one ear and fluid in the other, so she was going to Rx another 10 day round of antibotics. We just got off of a 10 day round last week. Maybe tubes in her future??
So after the respiratory stuff was addressed the Dr. turned her attention to the reason we were there, her arm.
After poking and prodding the Dr. felt that the issue was at the elbow, so she ordered X-Rays. What a horrible ordeal that was! The X-ray techs had to move her little arm into many different positions and she just screamed in pain, I don't wish that on any loving parent to have to watch the love of there life in such turmoil and not be able to do a thing about it. The only word to discribe it is horrible! At my request they had even already given her a dose of Oxycodone to help with the pain upon arrival and for the X-Ray. I can't imagine what it would have been like for her without that!
We waited for about 45 minutes for the X-rays to come back and they came back clear. We had anticipated that as the Dr. said that her bones were the equivalent of wet cement at this stage in her development so breaks were really hard to detect on film.
The Dr. thought that we were just dealing with a dislocated elbow which was a quick fix. After 4 or 5 awful attempts at snapping it back into place, the Dr. did get a pop. We waited another half hour and the elbow was much better however Maya was still in a lot of pain about midway between the wrist and elbow, she concluded that it was probably broken, put a splint on her and gave us a referral to a bone Dr. to follow up in the next few days.
Maya and I got home to our dinner guests around 8:30pm, they had all been having a great time. Maya was just miserable all night long. She could not stop coughing and was in total pain. I could not understand why the ER did not send us some pain meds home, and I did not think to ask. OTC pain meds did not touch it. So first thing upon arising I called her Dr. and got a RX called in. Tylenol with codeine and the antibiotic was picked up by daddy, gave her a bath, a breathing treatment and she perked up a tad.
